Here is a project to recreate the greatest ride from the glory days of Epcot. It seems to be just one guy working on it but from the speed of his impressive results I'm guessing he's some sort of alien half-fan half-computer creature. He has a rough interactive version you can walk through that is pretty damn cool (it does require the unity plug-in for your browser to try, but it's worth it and after you get it you can play fun games like this) at the moment you can just walk up to the building and go through a low-fi version of the queue area, but it has music and voice overs at the correct places and is pretty neat.

While on the topic of Epcot check out these great retro style posters for classic Epcot rides.

There's even separate group based on the ending locations from Horizons.If I had extra cash and extra walls I'd buy the whole bunch. But as the saying goes "Money can't buy you walls", (and I don't have any money.)

It just makes me want to drive to Epcot right now, but sadly it won't be twenty years in the past when I get there.

What the heck since I'm posting about it here's the best video about Horizons you'll ever find. That way you can remember how great it was and then think about the fact that it's gone... forever.

'Suitable For A Desire To Share' is almost 40 minutes of lushly layered electronic music to die for - or at least freeze a little bit.

We start off with the oddly titled 'Small, Brightly Coloured, Highly Arboreal', which hops up into the trees for some almost Boards Of Canada-esque loping beats and marvellously complex electronic beats. From there on, there's just all kinds of mature fun to be had, with 'Cumulonimbus Arcus' looping all over the place in delight.

What else? Blimey, 'A Minor Lovesong' is all guitars and style and 'Hover In Mid-Air' is semi-ambient bliss"

The Disney blog I've mentioned before ImagineeringDisney has a interesting post about Nara Dreamland a Japanese Disneyland rip-off that was open from '61 to '06. It has some great pictures of it in it's current abandoned state.

And here is a review of the park when it was open but in decline (it has many pages of photos ). It would be fascinating to be able to rummage around in a post-apocalypse version of disneyworld, which is what these photos kinda make it look like.

Here are some pretty neat behind the scenes pictures from the Pirates of The Caribbean ride at Disneyworld.

Bright lights are not the way to go if you want these pirates to not look like mannequins, which I suppose answers that question we've all asked while on the ride, "Why don't they crank the lights up and turn down that music so I can hear all the machine noise?"

This blog has a lot of cool stuff (asuuming you like reading about Disneyworld.) Like these magic ruining pictures of the Haunted Mansion.

And here is a blog dedicated just to Horizons, with photos taken by nuts that hoped off the ride and climbed around under the sets. But it seems like you gotta go back up bit to get t to the good stuff.

Sure that thing below is neat, but check out this even cooler online faux tenori. You can layer sounds with it usig the little boxes down the right, which each have a different sound, and if you right click you can clear the patterns for all the layers at once if you want to fiddle with a clean slate. which is super cool I only wish it was downloadable. It seems to be an offshoot of the tone matrix doo-dad seen at the Hobnox audiotool (which is pretty cool too but I already posted about it)

Man it's incredible how weird that looks! Soon it will start showing up on younger people until it's as common as stretched ears and pierced tongues.
(an odd sidenote is that I posted a thing about eyeball tattoos here in july of '07 wierd, of course I said the same thing then about it eventually becoming an everyday thing you see in malls, I guess it may take a while)

An alcohol substitute that mimics its pleasant buzz without leading to drunkenness and hangovers is being developed by scientists. The new substance could have the added bonus of being “switched off” instantaneously with a pill, to allow drinkers to drive home or return to work.

The synthetic alcohol, being developed from chemicals related to Valium, works like alcohol on nerves in the brain that provide a feeling of wellbeing and relaxation. But unlike alcohol its does not affect other parts of the brain that control mood swings and lead to addiction. It is also much easier to flush out of the body. Finally because it is much more focused in its effects, it can also be switched off with an antidote, leaving the drinker immediately sober.

The new alcohol is being developed by a team at Imperial College London, led by Professor David Nutt, Britain’s top drugs expert who was recently sacked as a government adviser for his comments about cannabis and ecstasy.

He envisions a world in which people could drink without getting drunk, he said.

Like a sillier Ghost Box kind of feel. It's from the Bleep43 podcast which looks like it has many other nice mixes, although I haven't listened to any others yet so perhaps they all suck terribly. Here's a link to a flash doodad that blogger refuses to embed for some reason. It plays a music clip forward and backward so you can hear the evil, evil messages we all know "pop" music contains (when played backwards, which seems like a kinda awkward way for the devil to do things.) The WikiReader is a neat little touchscreen machine that contains the entire Wikipedia. It's cheapish (99$) and runs on AAA batteries for a supposed 12 months of "normal use." You can even pay extra and get 2 updates delivered to you on microSD cards for 29$. It seems kinda neat and like it would be handy for kids (it has parental filters built in) or people without data plans on their phones, or those poor souls without internet access at all (although clearly those people will be too busy crying all the time to read wikipedia entries.) Here's a detailed review with lots of pictures.

It's made by OpenMoko who also make the FreeRunner which is a open source cell phone, so it stands to reason that the Wikireader will be open as well, which means it would probably be hackable into a cool little Ebook reader.

Also Yamaha is releasing a new Tenori with orange lights for only £649 (which if I understand correctly converts to fifty million American dollars so it's alot cheaper than the old model). Maybe if I wait it will eventually get lowered to free and then I'll get one. Of course I relealize that's not a Tenori in the video I believe it's one of these and look here's a video with both being played together, oh the lights.

This is how it describes itself "Revolving songs around various themes of nature, Orange Crush captures and freezes ephemeral moments, places where a listeners mind can wander through his hazy reverb drenched sonics. To compare it to Boards of Canada without the talky in between songs stuff would be fair (and I mean that in a good way.)
